HOW TO BUILD A SPRING WARDROBE WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK

Spring is here! Get us a new wardrobe.

With the new season and warmer weather, updating our closets becomes inevitable. But how can we do just that without buying a whole new wardrobe? We speak to personal stylist Josta Wood of John Lewis about what spring hero pieces to invest in and how to shop for your Spring, Summer wardrobe without feeling overwhelmed by the options.

DO YOUR RESEARCH AND INVEST IN KEY PIECES

A key element to building a spring and summer wardrobe is to do your research.

“When it comes to new seasons, I immediately want to know what’s on trend and how I can introduce new pieces into my wardrobe. Key pieces for me need to be of quality and have versatility.

“I’ll look for jackets, trousers, a light trench coat, a good quality Breton top and would possibly invest in a pair of white plimsolls.

“All of the items above have a twist to them and will fit perfectly into anyone’s wardrobe.

“Find a jacket with a bit of an edge, maybe a faux suede jacket, choose a soft grey  perhaps like the jackets by the mint velvet brand. This little number will go with anything in your wardrobe, from plain to floral and can take you from a day to a night time look or choose a bomber jacket, that will give you more of a relaxed and casual feel. The new sporty trend is a great way to introduce your bomber jacket right now, you will feel comfortable and weather-ready.

“There are a lot of trousers out there, finding the right style and fit can be very difficult at times. My key piece for this season is definitely a pair of high waisted floral trouser. With its multiple colours, you won’t be short of choosing a top to go with it.

“The trench coat, H&M have one in navy. It is very versatile and easy to wear. This will bring a touch of class into your wardrobe.  Breton tops, are a favourite too and have summer written all over them. It is important to remember that a classic will never go out of fashion. Depending on the styling a Breton top can take you to work or can be mixed up with a leather jacket for that grunge look you’re looking for.

“Plimsolls are everywhere right now, forget about heels and get on trend, without feeling the discomfort of a pair of heels while shopping. It’s very smart and comfortable, no need to break the bank with them, John Lewis’ own brand has some fabulous affordable pairs.

DETOX THE WARDROBE

“If you want to create a spring wardrobe on a budget first things first you will need a wardrobe detox.  Get rid of the unwanted clutter in your wardrobe, it’s taking far to much space. See what’s missing in your wardrobe then add your trend-led pieces. This will help you keep track of what you need without getting carried away.”

A wardrobe clear out proves to be such an important part of the process and having help is another great way of getting that final push you may need to get rid of certain items you no longer need.

“If you’re not sure where to start, book a personal stylist for advice.”

HAVE A HERO PIECE THAT YOU LOVE

“My hero piece for this season is my blush pink waterfall dress trench coat from Coast. It’s classic and feminine, this key style will take me right through this spring and summer season.”

USE TRANSITIONAL PIECES

Spring weather doesn’t always pop up straight away in the UK so transitional clothing needs to be kept in our wardrobes until we know the season is really here to stay.

“Transitional pieces are very important, I think they help us mentally in getting ready for the new season ahead.  My advice to you is get creative with your styles and your layering technique.”
